The last portion of Micah 6:8 tells us to walk humbly with your God. Because the previous wording is in couplets (do justly, love mercy), we think “walk humbly” is the main focus, and that is partly true. But every word in that last phrase is important! We need to walk with God, and “humbly” tells us how.

When you walk with someone, you are in close proximity with him or her. That closeness allows you to talk with one another easily, hearing what each has to say. You can look into their face and see their expressions and the color of their eyes! Being close might also imply friendship, or in some cases, perhaps love.

So to me, walking with God is building relationship with Him, but don’t forget: He’s the one who first initiated relationship with us! 1 John 1:19 tells us that we love Him because he first loved us. He has always wanted to have a relationship with us, but that was impossible with our sin. When we accepted Jesus, and the breach was repaired, it allowed us to approach the Lord freely, any time we so desired.

The trouble is, sometimes we don’t seem to put a priority on spending time with Jesus. We’re saved and acknowledge God, but so often go about our day-to-day lives without giving Him much thought. Meanwhile God is waiting, willing to pour into our lives. He wants us to get to know him, and in fact is “jealous” for us with a passionate, consuming zeal for our best interests! Just read 2 Cor. 11:2 ~ For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin. If we want to truly know Him, and take more of His likeness and character to the world, then we need to walk with Him as closely as we can!

As we begin to follow God, being a witness to others for example, or even as we deal with the mundane aspects of life, we must be mindful of whence cometh our help. Everything comes from Him! We can boast of nothing in ourselves. That’s where the humility comes in. When we acknowledge Him as our source in every aspect of our lives, with thanksgiving and gratitude for what He has done and is doing, we are walking humbly with our God.
